The short answer: start before cold nights arrive. Inspect every leaf, stem, pot and drainage hole; clean the plant and container; treat only confirmed pests with a product labeled for that plant and indoor use; keep returning plants separate at first; and gradually adjust them to indoor light and watering.
That little bit of preparation protects both the plant you are moving and the collection already inside. Aphids, mealybugs, scale, spider mites, thrips, whiteflies and fungus gnats are easy to miss outdoors. Once sheltered from rain, wind and natural predators, a small population can become a winter-long problem.
When Should Tropical Plants Come Inside?
Do not wait for frost. The University of Minnesota Extension notes that, depending on the species, temperatures below about 45–50°F can damage many houseplants. Check the needs of each plant and begin the process while days are still mild enough to inspect and clean outdoors.
A single cold-night rule will not fit every collection. Tropical orchids, foliage aroids, succulents and citrus differ in cold tolerance. When in doubt, move the most tender plants first and watch the forecast rather than the calendar.
Step 1: Create a Transition Area
Choose a bright porch, garage workspace, spare room or another protected area where returning plants can be cleaned and observed away from established houseplants. Separation is especially valuable because eggs and immature pests can escape the first inspection.
· Provide enough light for the plants you are holding there.
· Make the space easy to clean and keep fallen leaves picked up.
· Avoid crowding; touching leaves create bridges for crawling pests.
· Keep a dedicated watering can, cloth and inspection tool nearby if possible.
Step 2: Inspect the Entire Plant
Use bright light and, for suspicious specks, a hand lens or microscope. Inspect slowly rather than glancing at the top of the canopy.
· Leaf tops and undersides, especially along veins and folded new growth
· Petiole joints, nodes, leaf sheaths and tight crevices
· Stems, stakes, clips and moss poles
· The soil surface, saucer, pot rim and drainage holes
· Sticky residue, pale stippling, webbing, bumps, cottony clusters, distorted growth or black specks
Common Hitchhikers
Aphids and whiteflies often cluster on tender growth or leaf undersides. Mealybugs look like small cottony masses in joints. Scale insects can resemble stationary tan or brown bumps and may leave sticky honeydew. Spider mites are tiny, but stippling and fine webbing reveal their presence. Thrips can leave silvery scars and dark specks. Fungus gnats usually signal consistently moist organic media rather than damage to mature foliage.
Step 3: Clean Leaves and Containers
First remove yellow leaves, dead flowers and plant debris. Rinse foliage with a firm but plant-safe stream of water, paying attention to leaf undersides, then wash the outside of the pot and saucer. The University of Minnesota Extension recommends washing and rinsing foliage and cleaning containers before plants return indoors.
Do not assume every tropical plant wants the same treatment. Avoid forcing water into orchid crowns, delicate blooms or fuzzy leaves. Support large monstera leaves while cleaning them, and untangle trailing pothos vines so every section can be checked.
Step 4: Treat the Pest You Actually Have
Start with physical removal when practical: rinse soft-bodied insects, wipe scale or mealybugs from accessible areas, prune heavily infested tissue and replace debris-filled saucers. If a pesticide is needed, identify the pest first and read the entire label.

Test a small area on sensitive plants, follow ventilation and protective-equipment directions, and repeat only at the interval allowed by the label. |
Insecticidal soaps and horticultural oils can be useful for some houseplant pests, but coverage and repeat timing matter, and some plants are sensitive. Systemic products carry different restrictions and may be inappropriate for edible plants or certain settings. When identification is uncertain, photograph the pest under magnification and contact a local extension office before treating.
Step 5: Keep Plants Separate and Recheck
Keep returning plants apart from the established collection for an observation period whenever space allows. Reinspect during each watering, because newly hatched insects may appear after the initial cleaning. Sticky cards can help reveal flying adults such as fungus gnats or whiteflies, but they do not replace leaf-by-leaf inspection.
Step 6: Acclimate Plants to Indoor Conditions
Outdoor shade is often brighter than a typical indoor room. Abruptly moving plants into dimmer, drier and less breezy conditions can cause yellow leaves, wilting or leaf drop even when no pest is present. Ease the transition when possible and expect each plant to use water more slowly indoors.
Light
Begin in one of the brightest suitable indoor locations, then adjust for the species. If window light is insufficient, add a grow light on a timer and follow the fixture maker’s hanging-height and coverage guidance. Rotate plants only when the species tolerates it; orchids forming buds may react poorly to repeated changes in orientation.
Water
Check the growing medium instead of watering on the old outdoor schedule. Cooler temperatures, shorter days and lower air movement usually slow water use. Empty saucers and cachepots so roots are not left standing in water.
Humidity and Air Movement
Monstera, pothos and many orchids appreciate moderate humidity, but wet leaves and stagnant air invite trouble. Measure the room, group plants without packing them together and provide gentle circulation. A humidifier can help a dry space; keep it clean and avoid blowing mist continuously onto foliage.
