Why pH and EC Are the Foundation of Hydroponics

In soil growing, the earth acts as a buffer — it absorbs excess nutrients and moderates pH swings. In hydroponics, there's no such safety net. Your plants are entirely dependent on the nutrient solution you provide, which means pH and EC (electrical conductivity) are the two most critical numbers you'll manage as a grower.

Get them right, and your plants thrive. Let them drift, and you'll see nutrient lockout, deficiencies, and stunted growth — even if your nutrient solution is perfectly formulated.

What Is pH and Why Does It Matter?

pH measures how acidic or alkaline your nutrient solution is on a scale of 0–14. A pH of 7.0 is neutral; below 7 is acidic, above 7 is alkaline.

In hydroponics, most plants absorb nutrients most efficiently in a slightly acidic range of 5.5–6.5. Outside this window, certain nutrients become chemically unavailable — a phenomenon called nutrient lockout — even if those nutrients are present in your reservoir.

  • pH too low (below 5.5): Calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus become less available. You may see tip burn or purple stems.
  • pH too high (above 6.5): Iron, manganese, and zinc availability drops. Yellowing between leaf veins (interveinal chlorosis) is a common symptom.

What Is EC and Why Does It Matter?

EC (electrical conductivity) measures the total concentration of dissolved salts — i.e., nutrients — in your solution. It's expressed in millisiemens per centimeter (mS/cm) or parts per million (ppm).

EC tells you how strong your nutrient solution is, not what's in it. General target ranges by growth stage:

  • Seedlings & clones: 0.5–1.2 mS/cm
  • Vegetative growth: 1.2–2.0 mS/cm
  • Flowering/fruiting: 1.8–2.8 mS/cm

Too high and you risk nutrient burn. Too low and plants may show deficiencies or slow growth.

How to Test pH and EC

  • EC too low: Add more nutrient concentrate according to your feeding schedule.

Building a Daily pH & EC Routine

  1. Check reservoir temperature (ideal: 65–72°F / 18–22°C).
  2. Test EC — adjust nutrient concentration if needed.
  3. Test pH — adjust up or down as needed.
  4. Log your readings in a notebook or app.
  5. Top off with pH-adjusted water as reservoir level drops between full changes.

Consistency is everything. A 5-minute daily check prevents the kind of drift that causes major crop problems.

When to Change Your Reservoir

Even with daily top-offs, nutrient imbalances accumulate over time. A full reservoir change every 7–14 days is standard practice for most hydroponic systems. Flush your system with plain water before refilling to clear salt buildup from roots and growing media.
