Build a healthier, better-aerated root zone with Mother Earth Hydroton Expanded Clay Pebbles. Made in Germany from 100% natural clay, these lightweight pebbles are formed and kiln-fired to create a durable, semi-porous growing medium for hydroponics, aquaponics, container plants, and soil-free growing systems.

Hydroton provides an effective balance of moisture, drainage, and air space around plant roots. Its neutral pH helps maintain a stable growing environment without significantly changing the pH of your nutrient solution or growing mix. The pebbles can also be thoroughly cleaned and reused between growing cycles.

Features and Benefits

  • Natural expanded clay: Made from German clay formed into pellets and fired at high temperatures.
  • Improves root aeration: Creates air space around roots to support a healthy, oxygen-rich root zone.
  • Excellent drainage: Helps excess water drain while retaining useful moisture within the semi-porous pebbles.
  • Neutral pH: Maintains a stable growing environment without disrupting properly balanced nutrient solutions.
  • Stable growing medium: Generally stays in place instead of floating like some lightweight aggregates.
  • Reusable: Can be cleaned thoroughly and used for multiple growing cycles.
  • Versatile: Suitable for use alone, blended with other growing media, or added to containers for drainage and top dressing.

Ideal For

  • Hydroponic growing systems
  • Aquaponics and deep-water culture
  • Net pots and grow baskets
  • Container plants and indoor gardens
  • Improving drainage in potting mixes
  • Decorative and moisture-conserving top dressing

Pebble Size Options

Original Hydroton features approximately 8–16 mm pebbles for general hydroponic growing, container gardening, media blends, and top dressing.

Hydroton Giant features approximately 15–25 mm pebbles for applications requiring larger aggregate, greater structural support, or additional air space around larger root systems.

How to Use

Rinse the clay pebbles thoroughly with clean water before their first use to remove residual dust. Add them directly to hydroponic containers, net pots, grow baskets, or growing-media blends as needed. Hydroton may also be placed in containers to promote drainage or applied to the surface as a decorative top dressing that helps reduce evaporation.

Before reusing, remove roots and organic material, then clean and sanitize the pebbles appropriately for your growing system.

Mother Earth Hydroton

Excellent stuff! I add this to my media mix for Highland Nepenthes the King Sundew. Keeps the media from compacting. It’s also a fantastic drainage layer for these plants. I highly recommend this product especially if you’re using trays for watering or want an airy media.
