Coast of Maine Mount Desert Island Blend Organic Cactus & Succulent Mix is a ready-to-use potting medium formulated for cacti, succulents, tropical palms and container-grown citrus plants. Its textured blend promotes efficient drainage and root-zone aeration while retaining enough moisture and nutrients to support healthy growth.

Sand, perlite and aged bark create the coarse structure preferred by plants that are sensitive to persistently wet soil. Sphagnum peat moss and composted manure provide controlled moisture retention, while wood biochar, fish bone meal and kelp meal contribute slowly available organic nutrition.

Key Benefits

  • Designed for dry-loving plants: Formulated specifically for cacti, succulents, tropical palms and citrus plants.
  • Fast-draining structure: Sand, perlite and aged bark help excess water move through the root zone.
  • Improved aeration: Coarse particles create air space that supports healthy root development.
  • Controlled moisture retention: Sphagnum peat moss and organic matter retain useful moisture without creating an overly dense mix.
  • Contains wood biochar: Biochar helps retain water and nutrients within the growing medium.
  • Slowly available nutrition: Composted poultry manure, fish bone meal and kelp meal provide a mild organic nutrient charge.
  • Ready to use: No additional mixing is required for most cactus and succulent container applications.

How to Repot Cacti and Succulents

  1. Select a container with drainage holes that is approximately 1 to 2 inches wider than the plant’s root ball.
  2. Fill the container about one-third full with Mount Desert Island Blend.
  3. Carefully remove the plant from its existing pot and gently loosen tightly circling roots. Use gloves, tongs or a folded towel when handling plants with spines.
  4. Position the plant in the center of the new container at the same depth it was previously growing.
  5. Fill around the root ball with additional mix and lightly firm it with your fingers.
  6. Leave approximately one-half to 1 inch of space below the rim for watering.
  7. Water lightly and place the plant in an appropriately warm, bright location.

Watering and Maintenance

Allow the upper portion of the mix to dry between waterings and never leave the container standing in water. Cacti generally require less frequent watering than succulents, while palms and citrus have different moisture requirements. Always adjust watering to the individual plant, container size, season and indoor environment.

During active spring and summer growth, Coast of Maine recommends feeding cacti and succulents two or three times with an appropriate organic fertilizer. Reduce both watering and fertilizer during cooler or dormant periods.

Important: A fast-draining mix cannot compensate for a container without drainage holes or excessive watering. Check moisture below the surface before watering rather than relying on a fixed schedule.
