Coast of Maine Quoddy Blend Organic Lobster Compost is a nutrient-bearing soil conditioner made with composted manure, sphagnum peat moss, aged bark, and lobster and crab shell meal. Sometimes called “Quoddy Mix,” this original seafood compost adds organic matter while helping improve drainage, moisture retention and aeration in garden soil.

Quoddy Blend is ideal for revitalizing vegetable gardens, flower beds, borders and planting areas around trees and shrubs. Its mild 0.60-0.30-0.20 analysis provides slowly available nutrition while the compost and varied organic materials help improve the physical condition of poor or depleted soil.

Key Benefits

  • Improves soil structure: Adds organic matter that helps loosen dense soil and improve the body of sandy soil.
  • Balances drainage and moisture: Helps soil retain useful moisture while maintaining air space around roots.
  • Slowly available nutrients: Provides a mild nutrient charge derived from composted manure and lobster and crab shell meal.
  • Marine-derived ingredients: Lobster and crab shell meal supplies naturally occurring minerals, calcium and chitin-containing organic material.
  • Versatile garden use: Suitable for vegetables, flowers, herbs, trees, shrubs, beds and borders.
  • Annual soil maintenance: Can be mixed into poor soil or applied as a top-dressing to established gardens.
  • Organic gardening approved: OMRI Listed® for use in organic production.

How to Use Quoddy Blend

Conditioning Poor Soil

Spread approximately 2 inches of Quoddy Blend over the planting area and work it into the top 4 to 6 inches of existing soil.

Maintaining Established Gardens

Top-dress established beds and borders with a 1- to 2-inch layer. Keep compost away from direct contact with plant crowns and woody stems, then water the area thoroughly.

Planting Trees and Shrubs

  1. Dig a hole as deep as the root ball and approximately twice as wide.
  2. Position the plant with the crown or root flare slightly above the surrounding soil level.
  3. Backfill with equal parts Quoddy Blend and native soil.
  4. Firm the mixture gently without heavily compacting it.
  5. Water thoroughly and regularly until the plant becomes established.

Important Growing Information

Quoddy Blend contributes organic matter and mild, slowly available nutrition, but it is not a complete replacement for a crop-specific fertilizer program. Heavy-feeding plants may require additional nutrition based on their growth stage and soil-test results.

Although the shell meal contributes naturally occurring calcium, blossom-end rot can also result from inconsistent watering, root stress or impaired calcium movement within the plant. Quoddy Blend should not be presented as a guaranteed treatment or preventative.

Quoddy Blend is primarily a compost and soil conditioner. For container plants, blend it with an appropriate potting medium rather than using it alone as the entire container mix.
