Coast of Maine Sprout Island Organic Seed Starter is a ready-to-use, OMRI Listed® growing mix crafted specifically for seed germination and rooting plant cuttings. Its fine, well-aerated texture balances moisture retention with drainage, helping young roots access both water and oxygen during their most delicate stage.

Sprout Island combines sphagnum peat moss, compost, perlite and mycorrhizae with a gentle organic nutrient charge derived from composted poultry manure, lobster and crab shell meal, kelp meal and earthworm castings. It is ready to use in seedling trays, cell packs, propagation flats and small starter containers.

Key Benefits

  • Designed for propagation: Formulated specifically for germinating seeds and rooting plant cuttings.
  • Balanced moisture and aeration: Sphagnum peat moss retains moisture while perlite creates air space and improves drainage.
  • Gentle starter nutrition: Provides mild, slowly available nutrients suitable for developing seedlings and young roots.
  • Contains mycorrhizae: Beneficial fungi help support root development and nutrient uptake as plants become established.
  • Compost-based biology: Includes compost and earthworm castings to support a biologically active root environment.
  • Marine-derived ingredients: Lobster and crab shell meal contribute naturally sourced plant nutrients.
  • Organic gardening approved: OMRI Listed for use in organic production.

Ingredients

Sphagnum peat moss, composted manure, compost and/or mushroom compost, perlite, fertilizer and mycorrhizae.

The fertilizer charge is derived from composted poultry manure, lobster and crab shell meal, kelp meal and earthworm castings.

Guaranteed Analysis

  • Total Nitrogen (N): 0.35%
  • Available Phosphate (P₂O₅): 0.10%
  • Soluble Potash (K₂O): 0.05%

The nitrogen is slowly available from composted poultry manure, lobster and crab shell meal, kelp meal and earthworm castings.

How to Start Seeds

  1. Moisten the mix before filling your trays or containers. It should feel evenly damp without becoming soggy.
  2. Loosely fill cell packs, seed trays or small pots. Avoid compressing the mix heavily, as young roots need air space.
  3. Sow seeds at the depth recommended on the seed packet.
  4. Water gently or mist the surface so the seeds remain in place.
  5. Keep the mix consistently moist but not saturated while seeds germinate.
  6. Provide the appropriate warmth and light for the plant variety.
  7. Transplant once seedlings are established and roots hold the growing mix together.

Using Sprout Island for Cuttings

Fill a propagation container with pre-moistened mix, make a planting hole and insert the prepared cutting. Firm the mix gently around the stem and maintain appropriate humidity while roots develop. Keep the medium evenly moist while avoiding standing water or prolonged saturation.

Best Uses

  • Vegetable, herb and flower seeds
  • Seedling trays and cell packs
  • Propagation flats
  • Rooting plant cuttings
  • Indoor and outdoor soil-based propagation

Important: Sprout Island contains a mild starter nutrient charge, so avoid immediately applying strong fertilizer to new seedlings. This is a soil-based propagation medium and is not intended as a standalone substrate for water-only hydroponic systems.
