Emerald Harvest pH Down Premium pH Acidifier
Emerald Harvest pH Down is a concentrated phosphoric acid solution formulated to lower the pH of alkaline hydroponic nutrient solutions. Used carefully after fertilizers and supplements have been mixed, it helps bring the completed solution into the target range required for balanced nutrient availability and efficient root uptake.
Maintaining an appropriate pH helps keep essential elements such as iron, manganese, phosphorus and calcium available to plants. Emerald Harvest recommends targeting a final hydroponic nutrient-solution pH between 5.8 and 6.3.
Key Benefits
- Lowers excessive pH: Corrects nutrient solutions that test above the desired range.
- Concentrated formulation: Requires only small, incremental additions.
- Improves nutrient availability: Helps prevent pH-related nutrient lockout.
- Supports micronutrient solubility: Proper pH helps keep elements such as iron and manganese available.
- Hydroponic precision: Allows growers to fine-tune reservoir conditions before feeding.
- Source-water correction: Useful when alkaline water raises the final nutrient-solution pH.
- Media flexibility: Helps compensate for pH changes associated with rockwool, coco coir and other growing media.
- Outside-product compatibility: Useful when supplements from different nutrient programs alter the final pH.
Formulation and Product Information

Emerald Harvest pH Down is not a fertilizer and should not be applied to plants in its concentrated form.
Why Nutrient-Solution pH Matters
Plants absorb different nutrients most efficiently within different pH ranges. A slightly acidic hydroponic solution provides a practical compromise that keeps the complete group of essential nutrients available.
When pH rises too high:
- Iron and manganese may become less available.
- Phosphorus can react with other minerals and become difficult for roots to absorb.
- Plants may display deficiency symptoms even when nutrients are present.
- Fertilizer efficiency can decline.
- Root-zone biological activity may become less stable.
Correcting the pH helps restore nutrient availability, but it does not correct deficiencies caused by excessive EC, poor irrigation, unhealthy roots or an improperly balanced fertilizer program.
Recommended pH Range
Emerald Harvest identifies pH 5.8–6.3 as the preferred sweet spot for hydroponic nutrient solutions.
A broader range of approximately 5.5–6.5 may be acceptable for some crops and growing methods. Always follow the requirements of the specific plant, growing medium and fertilizer program.
Measure the final nutrient solution rather than relying on the pH of the source water alone.
When pH Down May Be Needed
Emerald Harvest base nutrients and core supplements are formulated to work together within an appropriate pH range. Additional adjustment may not be necessary when the complete program is used correctly.
pH Down may be helpful when:
- Source water has high alkalinity.
- The completed nutrient solution tests above the target range.
- Outside supplements alter the final pH.
- Potassium silicate products such as Sturdy Stalk raise solution pH.
- Rockwool, coco coir or another growing medium affects root-zone conditions.
- Reservoir pH gradually rises between changes.
- A competing base nutrient program requires manual adjustment.
Only use pH Down after testing confirms that the solution is too alkaline.
Correct Application Method
- Fill the reservoir or watering container with fresh water.
- Add all base nutrients in their required mixing order.
- Add compatible supplements individually, mixing between additions.
- Allow the completed nutrient solution to circulate or mix thoroughly.
- Measure the final EC or PPM and pH.
- If the pH is above the desired range, add a very small amount of pH Down to the water.
- Mix or circulate the solution thoroughly.
- Allow the reading to stabilize and test again.
- Repeat with another small addition only when necessary.
- Stop once the solution reaches the appropriate range.
There is no universal application rate because the amount required depends on source-water alkalinity, reservoir volume, fertilizers, supplements and growing media.
Important Mixing Rules
- Always add pH Down to water or a prepared nutrient solution.
- Never pour water into concentrated pH Down.
- Never apply the concentrate directly to roots or growing media.
- Never combine concentrated pH Down with concentrated fertilizers.
- Never mix concentrated pH Down and pH Up together.
- Mix thoroughly and retest after every small addition.
- Avoid repeatedly chasing pH up and down with opposing products.
If the target is significantly overshot, diluting or replacing part of the nutrient solution may be safer and more stable than repeatedly alternating between pH Up and pH Down.
Safety and Personal Protection
Emerald Harvest pH Down is classified as a corrosive product. Always read the current container label and Safety Data Sheet before handling.
- Wear chemical-resistant gloves.
- Wear chemical safety goggles or suitable eye protection.
- Use protective clothing when splashing is possible.
- Work in a well-ventilated area.
- Do not breathe mist or spray.
- Avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing.
- Wash thoroughly after handling.
- Keep an accessible source of clean rinse water nearby.
- Keep away from children, pets and unauthorized users.
The concentrate may also be corrosive to certain metals. Use compatible measuring tools and containers.
First-Aid Information
- Eye Contact: Rinse cautiously with clean water for at least 20 minutes. Remove contact lenses when easily possible and seek immediate medical attention.
- Skin Contact: Remove contaminated clothing and rinse the affected area with water for at least 20 minutes. Seek immediate medical attention.
- Inhalation: Move to fresh air and obtain immediate medical attention.
- Swallowed: Rinse the mouth. Do not induce vomiting. Contact a poison center or doctor immediately.
Always follow the current product label and Safety Data Sheet for complete emergency instructions.
