Espoma Organic Charcoal is an all-natural, high-carbon soil amendment designed to improve drainage, increase air circulation, and help keep container gardens, houseplants, and terrariums fresh. Made from untreated hardwoods heated at high temperatures without oxygen, this porous charcoal amendment helps create air pockets in potting soil while supporting better moisture management around plant roots.

Ideal for indoor plants, terrariums, planters, and containers with or without drainage holes, Espoma Organic Charcoal helps reduce soil compaction, improve root-zone oxygen flow, and act as a natural filter in enclosed growing environments. It is especially useful for terrariums and decorative pots where excess moisture and odors can become a problem.

How to Use Espoma Organic Charcoal

Containers with Drainage Holes:
Mix approximately 1 heaping tablespoon per quart of potting soil, or up to 2 cups per cubic foot of mix, to improve drainage and aeration.

Containers without Drainage Holes:
Add a 1–2 inch layer of charcoal at the bottom of the container before adding potting mix to help manage excess moisture.

Terrariums:
Layer charcoal over gravel or drainage material before adding soil. This helps filter water, reduce odors, and prevent soil from washing into the drainage layer.

For best results, use with a high-quality potting mix and avoid overwatering, especially in closed containers or planters without drainage holes.
