How to Use Espoma Organic Compost Starter
Choose a Composting Site:
Select a level, partially shaded area that is at least 4 ft x 4 ft.
Start with Airflow:
Add an initial layer of coarse materials such as twigs or small branches to help improve air circulation.
Layer Waste & Starter:
Add 6–12 inch layers of organic waste, then sprinkle approximately 1 cup of Compost Starter for every 16 square feet of layer area.
Moisten Each Layer:
Evenly moisten the layer, but do not soak it. Repeat with additional layers of waste, Compost Starter, and moisture.
Turn Weekly:
Turn the pile once per week to introduce oxygen and help speed decomposition.
For faster results, chop or shred larger materials before adding them to the pile. Avoid adding meat scraps, as they may attract pests.
