Why Electrode Cleaning Matters

A pH meter assumes that its electrode is clean when calibration is performed. Mineral deposits, nutrient salts, organic material, and other coatings can alter the electrode’s response even when the meter appears to accept a calibration buffer.

Contamination can also obstruct the reference junction, causing slow stabilization, drifting values, inconsistent readings, or repeated calibration problems. Regular cleaning removes residue that cannot always be eliminated with a simple water rinse.

Cleaning does not replace calibration or proper storage. These three maintenance steps work together:

  • Clean regularly to remove deposits and residue.
  • Calibrate as recommended to correct for normal changes in electrode response.
  • Store properly to keep the pH glass and reference junction hydrated.

How to Use

  1. Rinse the electrode with distilled or deionized water.
  2. Pour fresh cleaning solution into a clean vessel or open a single-use sachet, depending on the selected variant.
  3. Immerse the pH bulb and reference junction in the cleaning solution.
  4. Allow the electrode to soak for approximately 15 to 20 minutes.
  5. Remove the electrode and rinse it thoroughly with distilled or deionized water.
  6. Place the electrode in Hanna GroLine Electrode Storage Solution for at least one hour or as directed by the instrument manual.
  7. Calibrate the meter with fresh buffer solution before returning it to service.

Do not scrub or wipe the glass sensing bulb. Wiping can create static charge or damage the sensitive glass surface.

After-Cleaning Rehydration

Cleaning can temporarily disturb the hydrated layer required for proper pH-electrode response. After cleaning, place the electrode in an appropriate storage or conditioning solution to restore hydration before calibration.

Allow at least one hour for routine conditioning. A longer conditioning period may be appropriate for an electrode that was dry, stored incorrectly, or responding slowly. Follow the electrode manufacturer’s instructions when a specific conditioning time is provided.

Never store a pH electrode in distilled or deionized water. Pure water can deplete the electrode’s reference electrolyte and contribute to slow or unstable readings.

When to Clean an Electrode
