Price: $288.00

The Hanna Instruments GroLine HI9814 is a professional portable meter for monitoring pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), and temperature in hydroponic reservoirs, aquaponic systems, greenhouses, and other agricultural applications.

Its large three-line display shows pH, your selected EC or TDS measurement, and solution temperature at the same time. The included HI1285-7 multiparameter probe combines all four measurements in one replaceable sensor, eliminating the need to carry several separate meters.

One Probe for Complete Nutrient-Solution Monitoring

The HI1285-7 probe incorporates a pH electrode, EC/TDS cell, and temperature sensor in one rugged assembly. Its built-in preamplifier helps protect pH measurements from transient electrical interference produced by grow-light ballasts, circulation pumps, motors, and other equipment commonly found in indoor gardens.

A quick-connect DIN fitting and attached cable make it easy to install or replace the probe when necessary.

EC and TDS Readings

The HI9814 directly measures electrical conductivity and can convert that reading into TDS using either of the two most common conversion factors:

  • 0.5 conversion factor: Up to 3000 ppm
  • 0.7 conversion factor: Up to 3990 ppm

Because ppm readings depend on the selected conversion factor, always confirm which scale is used by your nutrient manufacturer before comparing the meter reading with a feeding chart.

Flexible Calibration Options

For convenient routine maintenance, Hanna Quick Cal solution allows the meter to perform a combined one-point pH and conductivity calibration.

The HI9814 also supports traditional calibration standards:

  • pH calibration: Automatic one- or two-point calibration using pH 4.01, 7.01, or 10.01 buffers
  • EC calibration: Automatic one-point calibration using 1.41 or 5.00 mS/cm conductivity standard
  • Quick calibration: Simultaneous pH and EC calibration using Hanna HI50036 Quick Calibration Solution

For the best pH accuracy in typical hydroponic nutrient solutions, perform a two-point calibration using pH 7.01 first and pH 4.01 second.

How to Take a Measurement

  1. Confirm that the probe is clean, hydrated, and properly calibrated.
  2. Connect the HI1285-7 probe firmly to the meter.
  3. Rinse the probe with distilled or deionized water and shake off excess droplets.
  4. Immerse the probe tip in the nutrient solution and stir gently.
  5. Lightly tap the probe to dislodge any trapped air bubbles from the EC cell.
  6. Allow the temperature and measurement readings to stabilize.
  7. Read pH and temperature while using the SET button to select EC, TDS, or pH-mV on the secondary display.
  8. Rinse the probe after testing to prevent cross-contamination.

Use a clean plastic container when testing samples outside the reservoir to help minimize electromagnetic interference.

Probe Cleaning and Maintenance

Nutrient salts, fertilizers, and organic material can coat the probe and cause slow, drifting, or inaccurate readings.

For routine cleaning:

  1. Soak the probe in Hanna general-purpose or agricultural electrode cleaning solution for approximately 20 minutes.
  2. Rinse the probe thoroughly with distilled or deionized water.
  3. Soak it in Hanna HI70300 Electrode Storage Solution for at least 30 minutes.
  4. Rinse away all storage solution before taking EC measurements.
  5. Recalibrate the meter before use.

Inspect the glass pH bulb regularly for scratches or cracks. The bulb is made of glass and should never be struck against the bottom or side of a hard container.

Proper Probe Storage

The pH bulb and reference junction must remain moist to maintain fast, accurate response.

After use, rinse the probe and place a few drops of Hanna HI70300 Electrode Storage Solution inside the protective cap before reinstalling it. If the probe dries out, soak it in storage solution for at least 30 minutes before calibration or use.

Never store the pH electrode in distilled or deionized water. Pure water can damage the reference system and shorten probe life.

Waterproof Design and Battery Life

The HI9814 meter housing carries an IP67 ingress-protection rating for use in wet growing environments. Before exposing the instrument to moisture, firmly connect the probe and verify that the battery-cover gasket is correctly seated.

Three AAA batteries provide approximately 600 hours of continuous operation. The display includes remaining-battery indication, low-battery warning, and Battery Error Prevention System protection. Automatic shutoff can be set for 8 minutes, 60 minutes, or disabled.
