Before the First Use
The HI1271 electrode is shipped dry and must be conditioned before calibration and measurement:
- Remove the protective storage cap.
- Rinse away any visible salt crystals with clean water. These deposits are normal for a pH electrode.
- Immerse the lower portion of the electrode in fresh pH 7.01 buffer solution for several hours.
- Rinse the electrode with purified water.
- Perform a one- or two-point calibration before testing a nutrient solution.
Proper conditioning hydrates the sensing glass and helps the electrode deliver a stable response.
How to Calibrate
For the best accuracy within the typical hydroponic range, perform a two-point calibration using fresh pH 7.01 and pH 4.01 buffers:
- Rinse the electrode with purified water.
- Press and hold the ON/OFF button until “CAL” appears.
- Place the electrode tip into fresh pH 7.01 buffer.
- Stir gently and wait for the stability indicator to disappear.
- Continue to the second calibration point when pH 4.01 begins flashing.
- Rinse the electrode and place it into fresh pH 4.01 buffer.
- Wait for the reading to stabilize and for the calibration to save automatically.
- Confirm that the calibration tags appear on the display.
A one-point calibration may be completed with pH 4.01, 7.01, or 10.01 buffer. Two-point calibration is recommended when greater accuracy is needed because it brackets the expected nutrient-solution pH.
Never reuse calibration solution or return used buffer to its original container.
How to Measure Nutrient-Solution pH
- Connect the HI1271 electrode to the meter.
- Press the ON/OFF button to turn on the tester.
- Remove the protective cap and rinse the probe with purified water.
- Immerse the sensing end in the nutrient solution without exceeding the marked maximum immersion level.
- Stir the solution gently with the probe.
- Wait for the hourglass stability indicator to disappear.
- Record the displayed pH value.
- Rinse the electrode after testing.
- Add several drops of electrode storage solution to the protective cap and reinstall it.
Test a representative, well-mixed sample. Avoid measuring immediately beside a concentrated nutrient or pH-adjuster injection point.
Replaceable HI1271 Electrode
pH electrodes gradually lose performance as their glass ages and the reference junction becomes contaminated. The replaceable HI1271 electrode allows the useful life of the meter to continue after the original probe becomes slow, unstable, damaged, or unable to calibrate.
Replace the electrode if proper cleaning, conditioning, and fresh calibration buffers do not restore acceptable performance.
The narrow probe design also makes it suitable for sampling from:

Electrode Care and Storage
- Rinse the electrode with purified water before calibration and between samples.
- Do not exceed the marked maximum immersion level.
- Keep the probe connector clean and dry.
- Never wipe or rub the glass sensing tip.
- If calibration produces an error, soak the probe in Hanna cleaning solution for approximately 15 minutes.
- After cleaning, rinse the probe and condition it in electrode storage solution for at least one hour before recalibrating.
- Keep several drops of Hanna electrode storage solution inside the protective cap.
- Never store the electrode in distilled or deionized water.
- Use fresh buffer for every calibration.
- Calibrate and measure at similar temperatures to reduce measurement error.
- Replace the HI1271 electrode if cleaning and conditioning no longer restore proper calibration.

Important Usage Notes
- The HI98115 measures pH only; it does not measure EC, TDS, nutrient concentration, or temperature.
- This is a handheld spot-testing meter rather than a continuous reservoir monitor.
- The 0.01 pH display resolution should not be confused with its specified accuracy of ±0.2 pH.
- The probe does not provide automatic temperature compensation, so calibrate and test solutions at similar temperatures.
- Use a separate conductivity or TDS meter when nutrient-strength measurements are also required.
