How to Calibrate
For most soil applications, use fresh pH 7.01 and pH 4.01 calibration buffers:
- Remove the storage cap and rinse away any storage solution or salt deposits.
- Rinse the electrode tip with purified water and gently blot it dry without rubbing the glass.
- Enter calibration mode by pressing and holding the ON/OFF button.
- Begin with pH 7.01 buffer and wait for the tester to recognize and store the stable reading.
- Rinse the electrode and place it in fresh pH 4.01 buffer.
- Wait for the second calibration point to stabilize and save.
- Return the tester to measurement mode.
Use separate rinse and calibration containers when working from bottles. Never return used buffer to the original container. When using the Hanna Lab App, follow the app-guided procedure for calibration at up to four points.
How to Measure Soil pH Directly
- Inspect the electrode and confirm that the bridge electrolyte gel has not dried out.
- Calibrate the tester with fresh buffers appropriate for the expected pH range.
- Use a soil auger or suitable tool to create a pilot hole approximately 20 mm wide.
- Make each test hole to a consistent depth when comparing multiple locations.
- Add a small amount of distilled or deionized water so the soil is damp but not saturated.
- Rinse the electrode with tap water and carefully insert it into the prepared hole.
- Observe the recommended immersion level and wait for the stability indicator.
- Record the pH and temperature using the LCD or Hanna Lab App.
- Gently rinse away remaining soil after the measurement. Do not scrape or wipe the glass tip.
Do not force the electrode directly into hard, compacted, or rocky ground. Doing so can damage the glass tip. For difficult soil, collect a representative sample and prepare it with Hanna HI7051 Soil Preparation Solution according to Hanna’s directions.
Understanding the Results
The preferred pH range varies by plant species, substrate, fertilizer program, and cultivation method. Soil-grown vegetables, tropical houseplants, orchids, container crops, and soilless media may require different targets.
Compare each reading with the recommended range for the specific crop and medium. If adjustment is necessary, consider soil composition, alkalinity, irrigation water, and existing nutrient conditions before applying lime, sulfur, or another pH amendment.
Electrode Care and Storage
- Rinse the probe between samples to prevent cross-contamination.
- Never exceed the marked maximum immersion level.
- Do not rub or wipe the sensitive glass tip.
- Clean sluggish electrodes in an appropriate Hanna cleaning solution for approximately 20 minutes.
- After cleaning, rinse the probe and hydrate it in electrode storage solution for at least 30 minutes before calibration.
- Keep the glass tip and junction hydrated with Hanna electrode storage solution.
- Never store the electrode in distilled or deionized water.
- Use fresh calibration buffers for dependable results.
- Remove and clean the junction sleeve and replenish the gelled bridge electrolyte when performance requires it.
- Handle the conical glass electrode carefully when testing dense media.

Important Usage Notes
- This instrument measures pH and temperature; it does not measure soil fertility, nutrient concentration, EC, TDS, or moisture.
- Automatic temperature compensation corrects the electrode response for temperature but does not convert the sample’s pH to a different reference temperature.
