RAW Humic Acid is a supplement rather than a complete fertilizer. It does not replace the nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium or micronutrients supplied by an appropriate base nutrient program.
How Humic Acid Supports Nutrient Availability
Humic acids contain numerous chemically active sites capable of interacting with positively charged nutrient ions. These interactions can help retain minerals within the root zone and reduce their tendency to become unavailable.
Humic compounds may be particularly helpful for maintaining the availability of trace elements such as iron, manganese, copper and zinc. This chelating activity supports nutrient efficiency but cannot correct an improperly balanced fertilizer formula by itself.
Cation Exchange and Nutrient Retention
Humic substances can contribute to cation exchange capacity, commonly abbreviated as CEC. A higher effective CEC allows certain growing media to retain and exchange positively charged nutrients such as potassium, calcium, magnesium and several micronutrients.
The effect is most relevant in soil and organic growing media. Coco coir already has substantial cation-exchange behavior, while inert hydroponic media and water-only systems respond differently.
RAW Humic Acid should be treated as a nutrient-management supplement rather than a substitute for proper fertilizer concentrations, runoff monitoring or media preparation.
Root-Zone pH Buffering
RAW Humic Acid can contribute to chemical buffering within soil and growing media, helping the root zone resist sudden pH changes.
It is not a conventional pH Up or pH Down product and will not automatically move every nutrient solution to a neutral value. Always measure the completed fertilizer solution and adjust pH separately when necessary.
High-alkalinity source water may require water treatment or an appropriate acid product. Severely acidic conditions should also be corrected according to the crop and growing medium rather than relying exclusively on humic acid.
How to Use
Add RAW Humic Acid to water or nutrient solution at the following rate:
- Light or Initial Application: Mix 1/8 teaspoon per gallon.
- Standard or Higher-Demand Application: Mix up to 1/4 teaspoon per gallon.
- Application Frequency: Apply as needed according to the selected nutrient schedule and plant response.
- Growth Stages: Suitable during vegetative growth, flowering and fruit production.
Begin with the lower concentration when introducing RAW Humic Acid into a new fertilizer program. Increase only when plant response, growing-media conditions and the applicable feeding schedule support it.
Recommended Mixing Instructions
- Fill the reservoir or watering container with fresh water.
- Measure RAW Humic Acid using a clean, dry measuring tool.
- Pre-dissolve the powder in a separate container of water.
- Add the dissolved solution to the main reservoir.
- Mix or circulate thoroughly.
- Add base fertilizers and other compatible supplements individually.
- Mix thoroughly between every addition.
- Measure the completed solution’s EC or PPM.
- Check and adjust pH after all fertilizers and supplements have been added.
Never combine dry fertilizer powders or concentrated nutrient products directly together.
Using It With RAW Kelp
NPK Industries recommends combining RAW Humic Acid with RAW Kelp using a 5:2 humic-to-kelp ratio. This pairing is intended to combine the root-zone and nutrient-retention properties of humic acid with the naturally occurring compounds found in kelp extract.
Use five proportional parts RAW Humic Acid for every two equivalent parts RAW Kelp, while keeping both products within their individual label rates. The 5:2 relationship does not override either product’s maximum application directions.
Plant response varies, and the combination should not be represented as guaranteeing higher yields, nutrient uptake or stress resistance.
Using It With Beneficial Microbes
Humic acid is compatible with many beneficial bacteria, fungi and microbial inoculants. It can support a favorable root-zone environment and provide surfaces and chemically active compounds associated with biologically productive growing media.
Unlike cane molasses, humic acid is not primarily a rapidly available carbohydrate food. Use an appropriate microbial food source separately when the biological program calls for one.
Avoid combining microbial inoculants with strong oxidizers, sterilizing agents or concentrated disinfectants.
Soil and Coco Coir Applications
In soil, RAW Humic Acid can support nutrient retention, root-zone buffering and the efficient use of applied fertilizer.
In coco coir, monitor input and runoff EC or PPM carefully. Humic acid does not eliminate coco’s need for appropriate calcium and magnesium management or proper buffering before use.
Avoid overwatering and maintain adequate root-zone oxygen regardless of the selected supplement program.
Hydroponic Applications
RAW Humic Acid is water-soluble and suitable for compatible hydroponic reservoirs and fertigation systems.
Humic products can darken the nutrient solution, so visual clarity should not be used as the sole indication of reservoir cleanliness. Maintain appropriate aeration, circulation, temperature and sanitation, and monitor filters and emitters regularly.
