Build healthier, more resilient soil with Wakefield Premium Biochar Soil Conditioner. Made from 100% sustainably sourced, plant-based wood biochar, this highly porous soil amendment helps retain moisture and nutrients while improving aeration, drainage, and soil structure.

Wakefield Biochar creates long-lasting pore space that provides habitat for beneficial soil microorganisms. Its stable carbon structure also supports carbon sequestration, making it a sustainable addition to garden beds, raised beds, lawns, containers, compost, and custom soil blends.

Features and Benefits

  • 100% plant-based biochar: Made from sustainably sourced wood waste transformed through controlled pyrolysis.
  • Improves moisture retention: Its porous structure holds water near the root zone and can help soil remain hydrated between waterings.
  • Holds valuable nutrients: Helps retain fertilizer nutrients in the soil and reduce losses from leaching.
  • Supports beneficial microorganisms: Creates protected pore spaces where naturally occurring soil bacteria and fungi can establish.
  • Improves soil structure: Adds lasting pore space that promotes aeration, drainage, and root development.
  • Works in clay or sandy soil: Helps open dense soils while improving moisture and nutrient retention in fast-draining soils.
  • Long-lasting soil amendment: Stable biochar remains useful in the soil much longer than amendments that quickly decompose.
  • Supports carbon sequestration: Converts plant-based carbon into a stable form that can remain stored in the soil for the long term.

How to Use Wakefield Biochar

Pots and Containers

Combine approximately 1 part biochar with 9 parts potting soil to create a 10% biochar blend. Mix thoroughly before filling the container, plant as usual, and water well.

Raised Beds and Garden Soil

Blend approximately 1 part biochar with 9 parts soil, compost, or raised-bed mix. Distribute the biochar evenly throughout the root zone rather than leaving it concentrated in a single layer.

In-Ground Gardens

Spread the biochar evenly over the planting area and incorporate it approximately 6–10 inches into the soil using a garden fork or tiller. Water thoroughly after application.

New Lawns

Spread the biochar over the prepared soil and incorporate it into the upper 2–4 inches before seeding or installing sod.

Existing Lawns and Bare Spots

Aerate the treatment area, distribute the biochar over the soil, and work it into the aeration openings or upper soil layer. Water thoroughly after application.

Compost and Soil Blends

Mix biochar with compost, fertilizer, or other amendments before incorporating it into the soil. This allows its porous structure to retain nutrients and support microbial activity.

Important Information

Wakefield Premium Biochar is a soil conditioner, not a complete fertilizer. It helps retain water and nutrients but does not replace an appropriate plant-feeding program. This original formula contains pure wood biochar and does not contain the added mycorrhizae or plant probiotics found in Wakefield CarbonBoost products.

Biochar can change how long soil remains moist. Check moisture before watering and adjust irrigation as needed. Follow the application directions printed on the package.
